All hail light rail

Projected light rail services should ease city congestion
Now
Over 70 per cent of Sydney city workers travel to work by public transport, the highest proportion of any Australian city. But ask any Sydneysider what gets their goat most and public transport gets the nod. After upgrades for the 2000 Olympics, Sydney’s bus, train and ferry system is now stressed and unravelling further.
Future
To reduce the impact of future traffic on public space, plans are afoot for a fast, frequent and reliable light rail loop joined to the Harbour Rail Link and new Metro–Rail lines which will connect Central Station to Circular Quay via The Rocks along Hay, George, Liverpool, Kent, Argyle, George and Alfred streets. The network would use Castlereagh Street as a main artery and service areas like Walsh Bay, Millers Point and the Barangaroo development at East Darling Harbour, a city fringe site expected to draw 15,000 additional workers and thousands of new residents in the coming years.
