Three city squares

Now
From the hubbub of historic Central Station sweeping down to Circular Quay and the blue jewel of the Harbour, George Street should be a culture spine of high voltage. Instead it’s a twisted intestine culminating in the swollen colon of the Cahill Expressway.
Future
George Street, the city’s primary “spine” will be reborn and linked by three city squares at Circular Quay, Town Hall and Central Station. These squares will be green spaces open to large public gatherings and welcoming of children, further prioritising pedestrians, favouring public transport and cyclists over cars and buses. By linking Sydney’s major public zones, the squares will reclaim the city centre from traffic, creating amenable sanctuaries for people to enjoy the CBD and increase and enhance life on the street by creating large pools of nightlife feeding into vibrant laneway arteries. The abolition of the Cahill Expressway will also open up a car-free “green corridor” and reconnect George Street with its natural gateway, the Harbour.
