Macquarie Lighthouse

Shining a light on Sydney's past

By fiona Olegasegarem

Built in 1818, the Macquarie Lighthouse is one of the most iconic yet mysterious buildings in Sydney. Not bad for a job designed and built by - you guessed it - a British convict.

Proudly standing as Australia's first and longest operating navigational light, the building has been off limits for the past two years. But now the newly refurbished lighthouse is ready and waiting for visitors.

Soak up the historic atmosphere on a lighthouse tour as you check out the beautiful mosaic floor featuring the NSW coat of arms and give your legs a workout by climbing the 100 stairs to the top. You'll forget your aching legs when you see the sensational views of the harbour and city.

The Macquarie Lighthouse tour is on Sun 31 Aug 10am-4pm.
