Verge Arts Festival

Counter-culture art and drama

By Millie Stein

Verge Arts Festival

Taking its inspiration from the great fringe festivals of the world, the Verge Arts Festival is all about delivering a smorgasbord of music, film, markets, good food and, of course, a whole heap of artistic expression. Organisers Max Rapley and Stephanie Iredale actually met through the Sydney University Drama Society, so high drama and an emphasis on performance is to be expected.

And in true counter-cultural style, art in this case refers to cabaret, films aplenty, spoken word sessions with mandatory use of profanities, a French poetry slam and performances where "artists sketch the freestylin' words of rappers and rappers freestyle to the sketchingof artists".

Plus, there's the eagerly anticipated  night markets and a zine fair on Thursday 11 September. Not your average scrap-booking and pottery affair, it would seem. And because there are always those who would rather spectate than partake, the Verge festival bar is the place where you can do just that, with a coffee or cocktail in hand.

Verge Arts Festival is on until Sun 14 Sep all around Sydney University campus.
