Parents Just Don't Understand: New Works by Kevin Lyons
"I am no artist," says Kevin Lyons. "This is not an art show. It is art made by a graphic designer. The harder I have tried to make art and consciously tried to create a traditional gallery show, the less the shit has worked. Yet I make monsters for my daughter in order to persuade her to eat her lunch and people want to see and purchase them as - you guessed it - art. The irony kills me."
Lyons is a typographer, art director and designer who founded stereo-type, which defined the look of the underground New York hip hop and acid jazz scenes. Design director of Stüssy and former creative director for Urban Outfitters, he now is design director for New York's Anomaly brand and an all-round icon of cool. Catch his work at Monster Children Gallery, 20 Burton Street, Darlinghurst, until July 16.
