Need a reason to drink... well its Catfish Day!

Any Excuse... National Catfish Day

"I, Ronald Reagan, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim June 25, 1987, as National Catfish Day. I call upon the people of the United States to observe this day with appropriate ceremonies and activities."

Yes, we kid you not. Lock up your cousins and get out the hams, it's catfish day! Those wacky Americans will name a day after anything. Low in cholesterol and a great source of protein, the catfish is happiest in freshwater ponds and likes eating insects, as well as grain when they can get it. Celebrated America wide (there's even an American ska band called National Catfish), the big mouthed, whiskered fish is the country's 3rd most popular fish and is generally fried and served with chips or dirty rice and greens.

To celebrate this venerable day in our fair city, you've got a few Aussified options. The main one, however, to steer very clear from basa (Vietnamese catfish) which is evil, frozen and imported. Instead, try the local varieties and fry the hell out of them, just like the southerners do.

Get a Sidecar in hand (a southern favourite of triple sec, brandy and lemon juice), a super cold beer, or even a wine spritzer, hire out a tinny on the Hawkesbury for the day and laze back like a professional. Hoo, daddy.
