The Victoria Room

The Victoria Room

Sultry summer nights in the Victoria Room lazing back on the wide-lipped chaise lounge with a Hemingway daiquiri (rum and maraschino liqueur with a shake of white grapefruit and a dash of lime) are proof positive of how good Sydney bars can be. It’s easy to be bamboozled by the chic decadence of the Victoria Room.

It carries all the romance of the tropics mingled with a peripatetic cocktail list rooted squarely in home turf (witness their Eucalyptus Martini) but also straying into deepest darkest Peru (an amazing Amazon Punch). Outside is the eat street of Victoria Street and its pizza parlours, schnitzel halls, burger joints and tiny Italian bistros. Down the road is the pulsating cardiac arrest of Kings Cross.

But inside the Victoria Room it’s anything you want it to be. One thing’s for sure: bartender Simon Keene knows how to keep pace with a crowd in the fast lane. More impressively he and his crew look after big crowds full of beautiful yet laid back punters in an open plan room sans TVs and pokies – now that’s style.

The Victoria Room Level 1, 235 Victoria Street Darlinghurst 2010. (02 9357 4488) Tue–Wed 6pm –12 midnight, Thu–Sat 4pm–12 midnight.
