The Wu Brothers
Founders of Incu clothing & Popfrenzy records
" If Sydney was an outfit..."
Vincent: It would be slim APC jeans, Chronicles of Never t-shirt, Vanishing Elephant Shirt and Springcourt shoes.
Twins Vincent and Brian own the achingly cool Incu shops on Oxford Street in Paddington and in The Galeries Victoria in the City - the latter doubles in size this week with the opening of separate menswear and womenswear stores. Older brother Chris runs iconic Sydney record label Popfrenzy.
Where do you go to get inspired?
Chris: I like going out eating at wee hours of the night in old local joints. Usually the food is much better and cheaper and there is always something weird going on. Chinatown is good for that, but lately I have been wondering in Coogee at the fight-club time of the night and I get a pizza or a pie and I have to juggle between the cops and flying hits, which is a bit stressful for a skinny Asian like me but rather entertaining.
Shop
Vincent: At the moment it is our new store in The Galeries Victoria. We've worked really hard to get the store experience right so that our customers feel welcome. There's always a fine line between a nice experience and something that looks over-the-top.
Bookshop
Brian: Kinokuniya in The Galeries Victoria. You could spend hours there without noticing.
Magazine
Chris: Magazine wise, I enjoy reading music mags like Plan B, lifestyle mags like Amelia and Monocle because they offer an integrated multidisciplinary vision of either current international issues or independent artistic and cultural trends. Cyclic Defrost is also a local zine that is worth consulting because the articles are well developed and the subject matters usually diverge from mainstream musical trends and are written with a lot of heart
Gallery
Vincent: ArtSpace in Woolloomooloo: very experimental and always bringing in new artists.
Outdoor space
Chris: Until last year, I had been to the beach maybe twice in ten years, and then I moved to Coogee. Not that I go swimming or anything, but reading the papers by the sea or just seeing it from far away is kind of nice which I would have never thought. Maybe next year I will actually touch the sand.
Who is your ultimate Sydney style icon and why?
Chris: My neighbour Richie Benaud.
Vincent: Daniel Johns always seems to have unique style.
What element of style does Sydney have that the rest of the world needs?
Chris: Bonds wife beaters in a fluoro colours
Who in your sphere is an up and coming Sydneysider to watch?
Brian: Ben Politt from Friedrich Gray... Loads of potential and he has only just begun.
