Going, going... won!

Raffan, Kelaher and Thomas

This inner-west institution is one of Sydney's oldest and most respected auction houses, frequented by housewives and Sydney socialites alike. Furniture, jewellery, bric-a-brac, decadent chandeliers and more are sourced from across the globe and presented, ready for eager bidders. RK&T is the first port of call for most of Sydney's best dealers and was, until now, one of their best-kept secrets.

Mitchell Road Auction Centres

This palace of treasures has outfitted the home of Australian rock royalty: perfect for picking up vintage furniture in near-new condition as well as the crockery and art to match. Mitchell Road also has an antique and design gallery that is open seven days and, according to our source is a great substitution for those who can't make it to the weekly actions.

Bonhams and Goodman

Their Double Bay and Waterloo houses specialise in jewellery (both affordable and fine) and fine art. The focus is on upmarket items and the auctions are themed so it's advisable to register on their website to ensure you are able to keep abreast of the whether it's a stunning silver neck piece or a Brett Whiteley going under the hammer this week.

Lawsons

Founded by Sydney raconteur James R Lawson in the 1870s, Lawsons is the city's finest purveyor of what our man on the auction floor, Martin Farrah, calls "the fruit of death, debt and divorce". Today, they shift over 1,500 items a week - art, antiques, bric-a-brac, furniture and wine - all bargains galore sold via commission on a sliding scale.
