Julia styles... She's one love-sick chick

What are you up to today?
I work at Popfrenzy and I run the record label there so that’s where I’ve been today. Tonight I’m going to see Spod at Spectrum on Oxford Street. Spod is this electro rock guy. He’s hilarious. I’m a photographer as well – mostly music photography. I moved up here from Melbourne.

How does Sydney compare to Melbourne?
Being a Melburnian I felt like a bit of traitor at first…but now I’ve been here for two years and everyone is pretty open-armed. I like the people, the enthusiasm. Everything is very genuine but I think I’ve been very lucky with the circles I move in.

Is the Gaslight your local?
No, no! I live in Newtown. We came here because we wanted to smoke.

Describe your style.
Effortless. In that I don’t really put too much effort into it. The man who processes my film says I’m anti-fashion. I don’t know what that means but I think he was trying to say in a nice way that I’m a bit of a slob.

What’s the story with your army shirt?
It’s my friend’s ex-boyfriend’s.

Do you go around collecting clothes?
Ha ha. Not really. When I wear this I feel like I need to protect my friend. I feel like her bodyguard, I become her boyfriend.

This is our Future Sydney issue. Where do you see yourself in five years’ time?
I want to start my own music label and set up a photography studio. Probably in the States. Then I’d like to go to Russia where my family is from originally.

Do you speak Russian?
Ya boodoo vrati! [a very bad phonetic transcription]

What’s that mean?
I’m going to vomit. Or, ya yoobshooshaba [an even worse phonetic transcription]. That means I love you.

Thanks very much – a useful combo.
