Muph & Plutonic

So, who are Muph & Plutonic?
One of the leading duos in Australian hip-hop today.

Woah, slow down there. Let's take this one at a time. Tell me about Muph.
Muph (short for Muphin, pronounced like the snack) is Dan Young, the MC of the pair. He got his start early on when he released his solo debut Who I Am back in 1999. He steadily worked on his craft and in 2001 he won the Victorian Verbal Mechanics Freestyle Battle competition, which pushed him into the limelight. Known for constructing intelligent, self-reflective lyrics, he commenced work on his second solo album, More Than Music, which was finished in 2003. While making the record, he worked heavily with Plutonic, which is how they came to form the partnership.

Right. So tell me about Plutonic then.
Plutonic (short for Plutonic Labs) is Leigh Ryan, and music has been in his blood from an early age. At 10, he took up the drums. At 14, he started to play live shows. He gained an honours from RMIT in Sound Design, studying under Phillip Brophy. In 2001 he released his first solo effort, Give Me Sabotage Shell, kicking off a career that would see him making beats for artists all around the world and becoming one of the most sought-after hip hop producers in Australia. 2004 saw the release of his second solo, Collision Of Days, which was followed a year later by Codes Over Colours.

And when their powers combine?
The duo released their first album in 2004. Titled Hunger Pains, it gained attention from Triple J with the lead single ‘Heaps Good' getting massive support from Triple J and the community stations. In 2006, Silence The Sirens was released, also gathering positive reviews from critics, who so often stand against Australian hip hop. They have just released their third studio album And Then Tomorrow Came, which is set to raise the bar of Aussie hip hop once again.

And I can see them live when, exactly?
Muph & Plutonic hit the Gaelic Club on Fri 29 Aug in support of their new disc, joined by DJ Bonez, The Grouch and Eligh (Living Legends) and Raph Boogie.
