Sydney's top 5 monthlies

If you only leave the house once this winter, make sure it's to go to one of these parties. By Jonathon Valenzuela

Sydney's top 5 monthlies

With the temperature dropping like a stunned seagull, the siren's song of the couch often takes precedence over the throbbing bass of the dancefloor. However, you've still got to blow off some party steam every once in a while, and this is where the monthly is your best friend. Catering to niche markets, they guarantee some of the most fun you can have in a club, running deep into the night and showcasing some of the best tunes chosen by the best DJs both local and international.

United Colours

Born out of the recent tropical house movement, United Colours brings together five of Sydney's DJ elite: Kato, Bad Ezzy, Charlie Chuxx, Act Yo Age and Wax Motif. A shared passion for the new wave of funky, tribal-influenced dance music led this crew to start putting on parties at Phoenix Bar. Since then, it has moved to Good God, followed by the Black Boater, and the decks have been graced by special guests like Yolanda Be Cool, Italian producer Solo, NYC DJ Kingdom and Sound Pellegrino Thermal Team, the public face of the influential French record label. Keep your eyes peeled on the website for new mixtapes and information on the next party.

Void

Dubstep may have burst into Sydney's clubbing consciousness only recently, but the bass soldiers at Void have been flying the flag for the last three years. With a stellar lineup of local DJs, including Victim, Garage Pressure, Mark Pritchard and Bec Paton, Void have been instrumental in popularising genres like garage, 2 step, jungle, drum n bass and all the latest genres to spread from the clubs of the UK. In addition to great Sydney spinners, Void also attracts huge international names like Skream, Benga, Caspa, Rusko and many more. To keep you moving in between events, they have a long list of live mixes at their website.

Britpop

As the new millennium continues its relentless march forward, the term ‘indie' has lost a lot of its meaning, with indie nights often straying deep into hip hop and dance territory. Not so at Britpop. Under the stewardship of founder Johnny Darko, Britpop remains staunchly dedicated to playing the best indie music to come out of the UK. Staffed by a rotating roster of Sydney's finest indie kids, including Mush, Tom Libertine, El Mariachi and Johnny Darko himself, Britpop promises a night of shout-along choruses and epic air guitar work. You can find all the latest info about upcoming nights, as well as social photos, at their website.

Jingle Jangle

Bust out your bobby socks and get ready to twist. Good God favourite Jingle Jangle is temporarily in limbo, but fingers crossed that they will return to their old home. Smokey Labeef and Exercise Mike play the coolest rockabilly, rhythm and blues and 20s to 60s pop music they can dig up. Once you hit the dance floor it's pretty hard to tear yourself away to the bar, but when you do, rest assured you can wet your whistle for a fiver. A word of warning: the crowd get pretty dolled up, so you better follow suit - Teddy Boy suit. Check in at their website to make sure you don't miss their triumphant return.

The Likes Of You

Those that like more sinister beats should try these parties on for size. Having hosted Argentinean tribal star Hernan Cattaneo, progressive legend Sasha and Detroit minimal inventor Robert Hood, the Likes of You is the hottest techno ticket in town. This month, party on at Arthouse on Saturday 3 July as German weirdo Stephen Bodzin gets freaky complete with white mime gloves and disco stick (well, MIDI wand to be precise). Later in the month, the crew deliver minimal magic by bringing Border Community head James Holden to Chinese Laundry on Monday 26 July. For tickets, head to their website.
