Vinyl Wars
Rookie wax spinners duel to turn the tables at Mardi Gras party

Winners play the MG party
It can be hard for DJs to break into
Sydney’s gay clubbing circuit. It’s a
tightly-knit community dominated by
old hands, and the number of DJs on
the scene far outweighs the number
of venues where they can spin. In response,
the New Mardi Gras festival
has hosted a DJ spin-off, Vinyl Wars,
as part of the annual Mardi Gras
festivities, for the last six years. It
gives up-and-coming DJs the chance
to show off their skills in front of an
appreciative crowd, with the ultimate
goal of scoring a spot at one of the
biggest gay events of the year: the
annual Mardi Gras Party.
Eight finalists have been chosen
for both the Girl’s and Guy’s competition,
to be held this weekend at the
Supper Club. They’ll be judged on
factors including technical ability,
crowd reaction and track selection.
The winners will play in the forecourt
at Hordern Pavilion for the
Mardi Gras Party, joining a slew of
national and international DJs to
entertain an estimated crowd of 4,000
queer revellers.
The Vinyl Wars DJ
Spin Off happens at the Supper Club
on Sat 9 Feb (Guys) and Sun 10 Feb
(Girls).
The Mardi
Gras Party is at the Hordern Pavilion
on Sat 1 March.
