Comedy Store Closes

On Wednesday 23 July Sydney's comedy scene got a lot less funny with the news that the Comedy Store Parramatta had shut a scant few weeks after its gala opening, with the Sydney one looking likely to follow. Not only is The Comedy Store Sydney's best-known name in comedy, it's also one of the few venues large enough for touring name comedians, and the Parramatta and Moore Park venues are the only ones offering week-long runs for comics.
"I just feel so bad for the comedians," laments Kim Shepherd, the ‘Store's former publicist. "What are they going to do? It leaves such a hole."
It wasn't entirely unexpected: by Monday 21 July the Parramatta section at the Comedy Store website had vanished and by Wednesday the entire site had been taken down. While the official word is that the Parramatta venue is closed and the future of the Moore Park flagship club is still uncertain, Time Out Sydney has received information that both venues have been shuttered.
What does this mean for Sydney? Can the Store be saved? Time Out Sydney will be fighting the good fight for Sydney comedy - stay tuned.
