Not Quite Hollywood

Mark Hartley celebrates the good, the bad and the ugly of Aussie films

Not Quite Hollywood

Before the censors' axe and before the Brazilian wax came the inspiration for Not Quite Hollywood - a wild look at Aussie genre cinema of the 70s and 80s. Sex, horror, violence and the downright daggy inspire the anecdote-packed documentary that was, according to director Mark Hartley, 10 years in the making.

"They certainly partied hard back in the old days. They said that was part of getting the energy on to their screen; ‘partying for the art' they called it. There were no rules, and if there had of been, they would have been broken," Hartley says. It's fun, fast-paced, and unearths films y'all never knew existed. Whether that's a good thing is still to be decided.

Not Quite Hollywood opens 28 Aug.
