Rummaging through the wardrobes of some of the members of Dykes On Bikes may not reveal the latest Prada classic or Alannah Hill corset, but it could house a damn fine looking tux which many of these ladies wear with the enough style to rival the debonair image of kd lang in Giorgio Armani.
With the annual Dykes On Bikes Black And White Ball rolling out the red carpet this Saturday night, tuxes, dinner suits and the occasional cockatail dress will be sported by long-time members, newbies and supporters of the DOB for the night which puts the balls in ‘belle of the ball.' While the event provides the perfect opportunity for the girls to lose their biker boots, jackets and helmets and glam themselves up for the night, it also serves as a fundraiser for the Gay And Lesbian Counseling Service, which is one of the many charities these two-wheeling heroines support throughout the year.
"The night has some great entertainment - live bands, DJs, drag king shows and even the odd stripper phoned in," says the DOB's president Neddy Mesure.
Over the past ten years the fundraiser has seen a line up of lesbians in nuns habits, dyke penguins and even the occasional leather bear grace the ball. "We also invite our kindred groups such as Sydney Leather Pride Association and of course the Harbour City Bears, so we do get a few fellas in the mix," says Neddy. Although the lads may be greatly outnumbered, this is the jewel in the bike helmet of Sydney's Lesbian scene.
