Fight Like a Girl
Arm yourself against hate crime with a free self-defence class specially for the queer community.
By Andrew Georgiou
While I can throw a Zsa Zsa Gabor inspired bitch-slap as well as the next queen, my self-defence skills aren't as sharp as a Saturday night on Oxford Street demands. Let's be frank: the days of safely walking down the golden mile dressed as Marilyn Monroe complete with stubble, or as a Tom of Finland leather daddy, are over. Not all of Oxford Street's visitors share a respect for the culture which birthed their new playground, and the reality is that self defence is a skill we can longer afford to overlook.
The Harbour City Bears in conjunction with the City of Sydney Council are offering free self-defence courses to the community as part of their ongoing commitment to enriching queer culture in our city. This one-day course offers the basics in self defence without the aggressive vibe, which, after all, is what the world needs less of.
The Fight Like a Girl classes offers practical skills for beginners through to a brush-up for those wishing to freshen up on their techniques. The course kicks off Saturday 15 November. Numbers are limited, so to register please email Jonny at HCB (jonny@hcbears.com).
Fight Like a Girl is on Sat 15 Nov at 2pm, Darlington Public School, Golden Grove St, Darlington 2008.
