Ghetto Pussy

While many live acts on the scene rely on a retro appeal to gain familiarity, underground act Ghetto Pussy are one of the most original to have clawed their way on to the club circuit. Made up of Vinni and Cherri, these queer dears have forged their own path with a musical style they describe as "gutter punk, dirty glitter, chainsaw lungs, cigarette screams and hardcore glamour beats".

Ghetto Pussy have the charisma of a child pageant star with ADD and the style of Karl Lagerfeld on crack. When asked what punters can expect from one of their performances, Vinni and Cherri hit back with a description laden with ‘fuck you' imagery. "Music theatre on acid... High heels and sequins, gut-wrenching screams, blood and scars, broken glass, glitter and cream, crucifix, kinks, guitar feedback kiss, eye patch, leather-tasseled jackets, tube skirts, banana-sex, power suit, bridal bitch, s/he bops, milkshakes and deadly nightshade." They couldn't be clearer.

With a performance style that is far more ‘out' than many of their contemporaries, Ghetto Pussy's eclectic use of props and costumes makes for groundbreaking stuff. Picture,if you will, Cherri, wrapped in plastic, attempting to free herself from bondage that has secured her to a crucifix for half the show, whilst the fabulous Vinni stands by looking gorgeous in the smallest of denim shorts, sky-high stilettos and an oversized tulle bow perched on one shoulder.

Queer? Certainly. Hard as steel? Definitely. Should a bar room brawl break out, you can't help but assume Vinni would quite happily kick the crap out of any drunken heckler with one of his thigh-high PVC stiletto boots. And should some drunken trollop try and steal the spotlight from Cherri, you can rest assured she would not hesitate to smother them with her fabulously ample bosom whilst ripping out their hair. Not since the early 80s have we seen performers pushing gender boundaries with such wit and irony, and most importantly, with that raw ‘bite me' attitude.

Ghetto Pussy perform live on Wed Sep 3 at Queer Central, The Sly Fox, 199 Enmore Rd, Enmore 2042. (02 95571016).
