Paul Capsis returns to the Vanguard
We have said it before and we'll say it again: Paul Capsis is a national treasure. Widely regarded one of Australia's best cabaret artists, Capsis has stunned Sydney audiences for over two decades with emotional and jaw-dropping performances that leave punters craving for more.
Having grown up in a working-class suburb as a Greek-Australian boy, Paul was no stranger to feeling like an outsider, especially when it came to his school years. However, it was his exposure to theatre at that time that triggered his love affair with acting.
Now, with more than ten years of both national and international theatre performances that include Capsis vs Capsis at the Sydney Opera House, The Lost Echo with the Sydney Theatre Company and Boulevard Delirium, which he took to Schauspielhaus, Vienna, Paul is now at a very special place in his career. Add to that his various releases on record including Paul Capsis Live and his most recent and brilliant Everybody Wants to Touch Me and you begin to understand just how significant his artistic contribution is.
News of his performances at the Vanguard in Newtown this week have had Capsis fans booking tickets to his two shows hard and fast. They can expect to experience his raw and heartfelt delivery of classics made famous by the likes of Janis Joplin and Nancy Sinatra, right through to his own compositions such as 'Red Door' and 'Angela's Sea'. These songs in particular demonstrate how Paul can step away from the diva-channelling he is renowned for and just be himself in front of the mic.
Paul Capsis plays the Vanguard on 2 & 3 Jul.
