No ifs, no buts say Sluts

A group of Sydney's most dedicated sluts are doing our city proud. Andrew Georgiou chats with Safe Sex Slut Zac

No ifs, no buts say Sluts

What is the Safe Sex Slut program? It's a group of volunteers run by ACON that get together and promote safe sex by providing condoms, lube and information at gay parties and events. The Sluts first stepped out onto Oxford Street in 1988 and have worked at just about every gay and lesbian event since.

Talk us through what you do while wearing the Slut Sash. It depends on the event but generally we hand out condoms and lube at gay parties, look after lost property, take donations, hand out lollies and Chupa Chups. At Mardi Gras this year we handed out over 40,000 safe packs. And if you think we're busy, spare a thought for our team of volunteer safe pack packers!

What does it take to be a damn good slut? A crazy social personality, a big smile, to remember what you are there to do and to have fun.

What are the biggest challenges you face while spreading the word? Some of the public ignore us and have a bad attitude to what we are promoting. Why refuse free condoms?

Do you carry a variety of assorted colours and flavours and dare I say textures? Well, most men prefer large! But a range of sizes is generally available at the events we attend. They also come with a lube sachet and a safe sex info card.

How does our city handle safe sex education and resources? I can walk into almost any gay venue and get free condoms. It shows in our stats that what we are doing is working.
