Butterfly release at Sydney Wildlife World

Butterfly release at Sydney Wildlife World

Hot and humid, replete with lush tropical vegetation and pools of sugared water, Sydney Wildlife World has created nothing short of butterfly heaven, so there's no need to call in the heavies at PETA.

They've also created a rare opportunity to see butterflies up close, and you can grill the keeper with all your burning butterfly questions.

First stop: the butterfly nursery - a place where chrysalises hang and butterflies are born. After checking the chrysalises are sleeping soundly, it is time to collect your butterfly.

Hand-selected especially for you, it is your responsibility to release it into its new home. Ease your butterfly into its strange new universe by letting it warm up on your hand.

All going to plan, the butterfly will then spread its wings and flitter off to join the others.

Aw, shucks. If only moths were this cute.

Sydney Wildlife World, Aquarium Pier, Darling Harbour 2000. (02 9333 9288) Adults $29.95; child $15; concs $20.50. Butterfly release daily 2.30pm. $20. Bookings recommended.
