Time Out makes the picks of the 2008 litter

The inaugural Sydney Children's Festival this week will transform
CarriageWorks into a playground for kids. "The point of the festival is
to celebrate children's imagination and creativity and to encourage
children to be artists," says festival producer Tory Louden. "There are
plenty of opportunities for them to be involved and to be hands on, so
we hope they will be inspired, entertained and educated." Here is our
pick of the highlights...
Critical Mass FREE! Sat 27 Sep. 6.45pm.
The festival kicks off with a twilight concert featuring 100 young flautists tootin' their flutes.
Jungle Fever Tue 30 Sep-Sat 4 Oct. 10.30am & 1pm. Tickets $16.50. Anyone
who's ever wanted to run away with the circus will love this
high-flying trapeze and acrobatics spectacular inspired by classic
children's tales.
Circus Workshops Mon 29 Sep-Sat 4 Oct. Circus Skills for ages 5-15yrs. 11am. $12. Aerial Skills for ages 5-15yrs. 2pm. $16. Bookings essential.
Once you've dropped your jaw in awe of the amazing circus performers
in Jungle Fever, you'll be able to join in the fun at one of
Aerialize's fun workshops. Learn how to juggle, spin hula hoops and
work spinning plates - and even have a go on the trapeze.
The Petting Zoo Tue 7-Sat 11 Oct. 11am & 1pm. Tickets $16.50. Pat,
feed and interact with dinosaurs. This unique space allows kids to get
up close and personal with life-like models of creatures from an age
gone by.
Documentary Makers
Week-long course Mon 29 Sep-Fri 3 Oct. 10am-4pm. $280. Kids can practice camera craft and learn the fundamentals of producing their own doco.
Puppet Workshop 1 Wed Oct-Wed 8 Oct. 11am-4pm. $55. A practical and creative exercise, children will learn how to use light and shadow to make their creations come to life.
Cartooning with Matt
Ottley Sat 4 Oct. 2pm-3pm. $15. This fun and practical workshop will teach children the tricks of the trade from an award-winning author and
illustrator. Ottley teaches some drawing and colouring techniques that professional illustrators use.
Storytelling corner FREE! Children's authors read extracts of their books and encourage a love of reading and writing.
Moya Simons will read from The Walk Right in Detective Agency. Wed 1 Oct. 10.30am.
Sue Whiting will read from The Firefighters. Wed 8 Oct. 10.30am.
Tina Mathews will read from Out of the Egg. Sat 11 Oct. 10.30am.
Apology Day Exhibition Everyday. 10am-4pm. Free. Celebrating
Reconciliation Week, this exhibition features photographs that were
taken in Redfern Community entre on National Apology Day, by
photographers aged between five and 22 years.
