Streets of style

Sydney knows sass and style - and there are few sassier and more stylish than these up-and-coming local talents. Please make welcome hip-hop electro queen Catcall, style diva Ms Fitz, DJ crew Hoops and the rhyme-spittin' S.Y.L.K.

Streets of style

Ms Fitz

What are you about? I’m a freelance stylist/artistic director. I style high fashion editorial, film clips and musicians, and recently entered the world of mainstream television by styling the hip hop looks for So You Think You Can Dance.

What’s your style? It’s always changing! Recently I’ve been rockin’ this “Bollywood meets NBA” look. Before that it was “Hypercolour Harlequin”. The only consistent element is that my style is always inspired by art, colour and the streets.

How did you develop your style? I usually get obsessed with a particular artistic, musical or sociological movement and re-interpret it with a Ms Fitz twist. My style is deeply referential and a bit nu wave, but there’s an element of current trend thrown in there as well.

Why are people going to be stunned by your radness? Pffft. Ha! I can’t promise that! I’m just gonna keep rockin’ my shit and hope that they like it.

Catcall

What are you about? I am 22 years old and spent the last couple of years playing in a punk band, then I started doing a solo project. I produce the tracks with a Melbourne dude called Crumbz, who plays in grind bands and goes between grind records and rap records. I play live with Sleater Brockman: he appreciates r’n’b as much as I do, which is a total requirement for everybody I work with.

What’s your style? I guess my musical style is a mish mash of all my tastes, but always ends up being quite simple. I listen to everything from Santogold to Madonna, Swans and The Germs. I’m influenced by so many different artists and totally inspired by so many different worlds that I just organically make music and see what comes out. My personal style is the same as my musical I think: simple and inspired by the old and the new.

How did you develop your style? I think from getting into so much underground music from friends’ mix-tapes and from collecting records, and having an interest in old musical scenes and movements, but also being completely obsessed with pop music and modern rap and r’nb’. Like Huggy Bear meets Cassie, or something.

Why are people going to be stunned by your radness? Stunned? I don’t know about that. Possibly confused? I love all the slick pop stuff but I’m totally rough around the edges and that cannot be helped.

S.Y.L.K.

What you about? Having fun, syk rhymes and looking fine…

What’s your style? We’re lyrical miracles and our style is a visual bomb. We’re Kelly, Donna and Brenda from 90210 mixed with Jem and the Hollograms and a dash of Salt ‘n Pepa!

How did you develop your style? It comes naturally – like honey to the B.

Why are people going to be stunned by your radness? ‘Cause we know we’re looking fine, we bring the fancy feast that’ll blow your mind. We’re smooth operators with a classy touch. We know just how to work it and we’re gonna show you up.

Hoops

What you about? Hoops is Nina Las Vegas, Bad Ezzy and Anna Lunoe. Three female DJs that push dirty beats and bling with slammin’ outfits and moves. We run a party called HOOPS, but you can catch the three of us DJing all over town.

What’s your style? Blinging.

How did you develop your style? More is MORE. Hoops works with the music we play. The more we DJ, the more we get excited by the music, the more we want to show it, and the more we want to share it. This may mean dancing on the speakers, wearing way too much gold makeup or spinning back a track that everyone is loving, only to play something that we like more.

Why are people going to be stunned by your radness? Because we genuinely have fun behind the decks. Even if you’re in the worst mood, our complete lack of sensibility, impressive kicks and stupid amount of gold chains will cheer you up. And where else will you see girls grind to Slim Thug, Crime Mob and Lil Mama?
