Daytripping... Lane Cove

A short drive, bus ride or cycle from the city centre, Lane Cove National Park boasts a diverse swathe of outdoor attractions. Governor Phillip was the first European to visit the Lane Cove River Valley – he led an expedition into the area about three months after the arrival of the First Fleet in January 1788. The area became popular with picnickers in the 1930s and was made a national park in 1938. These days, the river is the focus of the park – visitors can hire a row boat or enjoy a walk along a section of the 250km Great North Walk, which stretches from Sydney Harbour to Newcastle. More placid types can kick back on the river banks, fire up the barbeque (wood fires are allowed) and lap up the serenity.
