$11.50 Big Bite - Vegie sanga ($8.50) & ginger beer ($3)

Forget everything you thought you knew about sandwiches and head to Big Bite, where two Greek sisters are making sandwiches as big as your head. The lines are out the door every day from noon onwards so you can either get there early, do the queuing thang or get there later on and risk a smaller selection of fillings. Our fave is the roast vegetable (pumpkin, potato, eggplant, carrot, tomato and mayo) sambo on brown that's so large even Pavarotti would have had a hard time finishing it. Wash it down with a fizzy ginger.

$13.90 Spice I am - Som Tum

If you like your Thai food authentic, spicy and tasty as the day is long, you've come to the right neck of the woods. Their som tum is the best in town as well as being fab value - shreds of green papaya are fired up with chopped chilli, peanuts, teeny dried shrimp and cherry tomatoes dressed with a mix of palm sugar, fish sauce and lime juice. Bright and refreshing, it's spicy and might just be the best Thai that Sydney offers for tiny dollars.

$15 Rockpool - Moroccan fish burger

Rockpool's bar might be starker than stark on Philippe Starck Day, but sit down at one of the high dark wood benches (or for something more action-packed, at the bar that looks straight into the kitchen) and order the Moroccan fish burger - all the off-cuts of Rockpool's amazing fish lumped in with a spicy Moroccan spice paste. You can totally eat here for $15, but the temptation to stray and listen to the Rockpool siren song and order more than you need is huge. Tie yourself to the mast, block your ears and eat your burger.
