12 midnight...
The Golden Century Haymarket
The Golden C crew bring out a special late night menu at 10pm - give the nod and order the pork and preserved congee (Chinese rice porridge) any time after that. One serve of congee can be spread among four people, if you're on the austerity drive.
Emperor's Garden Haymarket
For the best Chinese style roast pork in town, you can't beat this Haymarket stalwart. Crisp skin, sweet meat and greens on the side - ooh, baby. They do takeaway out of a little hole in the wall too.
Vini Surry Hills
The Europeans do the late night dining thing better than anyone - drink a finger of their sensational range of grappa and have a bowl of pasta or a charcuterie plate.
12 Midnight-3am...
East Ocean Haymarket
Their salt and pepper squid is light, beautifully seasoned and very moreish. The baby bok choy stir fried with garlic are teeny, tiny and sweet. Got cash as well as midnight oil to burn? Go the barbecue pork.
Sydney Madang Sydney
There's a little alley off Pitt Street filled with Korean gear - comics, takeaway food, weird soft drinks and, of course, Korean barbecue. Their fried dumplings are excellent but the most exciting thing are the little side dishes served with every meal - pickles, shreds of fish cake and untold pot luck. Daily til 1am.
Excellent BBQ Eastwood
The specials are the go here, like shelled prawn congee or the beef brisket steamed rice roll. Their steamed-then-fried pork dumplings with rice vinegar are the shizzle. Daily till 1am.
Aperitif Kings Cross
The ultimate after hours restaurant. Open late, late, late with an all-French wine list and a menu that spans from traditional French (onglet with shallot sauce) to Mediterranean (chi chi), you'll find everyone from chefs eating dinner after service to late night booze hounds after a nice drop and a bite.
Favela Kings Cross
Sit at the bar, order some edamame or salt and pepper cuttlefish, drink a beer or a cocktail (they do a great Daiquiri) and people watch. Favela's beautiful people put on quite a show of themselves.
24 hours...
Maisy's café Neutral Bay
At Maisy's, brekky is 24/7 (go for the mega breakfast with eggs, bacon, tomato, sausage, hash browns, mushroom, baked beans, tomato and toast) and though the space is small, it's always pumping. Open 24 hours.
Pancakes on the Rocks Sydney
You can eat breakfast 24 hours a day. Yes, that's right, folks - eat a pancake breakfast complete with bacon, eggs and bananas at three in the morning with a beer chaser.
