Best Sydney Song - who won?
The nominees are:
At 20 years old Jonathan Boulet is the perfect product of endless campfires and tribal jam sessions – a poignant and innovative songwriter with a fully formed pop sensibility. This track is a Friendly Fires-esque excursion into melodic, rhythmic bliss – apparently recorded in his tiny garage when this track landed we wanted to play it, on repeat, as a Community Service Announcement. As in something everyone should hear.
One half of bluejuice lead men, Jake Stone, broke his hand and leg last year after some an over-animated performance. Every time we sit down to try and deconstruct the lyrics to this song we always end up dancing maniacally and missing the point. Every time, by the time the song’s over, we’ve forgotten about the deconstruction and have pressed play again.
When we first heard this track we spent the next week fluctuating between one liners of “I’ve got no money, I’ve got nobody,” “what could possibly go wrong,” and the tracks titular chorus clincher like the song had been a part of our consciousness since the day we were born. Goodness knows, the Philly Jays write a good pop song.
Featuring a who’s who of Sydney music (featuring Jack Ladder and members of Dappled Cities and Decoder Ring), this track is constructed perfectly. Starting gently with Fergus introspectively wandering, musing, the track builds and builds as drums, keys, glock & co all embellish Ferg’s lyrics, both clever and heartfelt.
This track came as the taster to their third record, Zounds, and hearing it made us think Modest Mouse, Arcade Fire and – well – Dappled, more than ever before. Drums propelling the track, strings and synth engulfing Tim’s vocals deftly deliver his analysis of human relationships. It’s a grand and ambitious track that will be Dappled’s anthem for years to come.
A provocative song, ‘We Won’t Run’ is warm, open and catchy. On this track the instrumentation and production compliment a beautifully penned and performed song. Luscious strings, insistent drumming and Sarah’s vocals coming through as the finest centerpiece a song like this can have.
