French bliss

Kathryn's on Queen, Woollahra
Channel Marie Antoinette at the height of her reign with classically restored antique French furniture, flower-filled balconies and charming décor. Don't be tempted to skip breakfast either - the kitchen caters to all desires and appetites and the lovely Kathryn will serve it up al fresco when the weather is warmer.

Love nEst

Establishment Hotel, City
True to the Hemmes brand, no expense has been spared on this extravagant, immaculately presented hotel. Snuggle down and relax with pure cotton linen and the enormous LCD television or have a soak in the marble bathroom. There's a well stocked mini-bar too, but with all the fine dining to be found right under your floorboards, why would you bother with a Snickers?

It's a gem

The Diamant, Kings Cross
Floor to ceiling windows, billowing curtains and bare lighting give this hotel a distinctly grown-up feel. Here you'll find the casual jet-setting elite side by side with fly-by-night business travelers and perky young couples. The rooms are immaculate and the location, on the edge of the Cross with very easy access to the city, means you can work and play at leisure.

Puppy Love

Medusa, Darlinghurst
Miles away from predictable beige sleeper: located in bohemian Darlinghurst, each room is splashed with colour and contemporary furniture while retaining the original high ceilings and finishes. Dogs are warmly welcomed, too, if you ask for one of the designated courtyard rooms.

Beach party

Ravesi's, Bondi
Right on Bondi Beach, the rooms make full use of their panoramic view of the ocean and buckets of morning sun. The best thing about this place has to be the tiny stumble home, when the combined action of sand, surf and local bars and restaurants leave you happily exhausted at the end of the day.

Urban wilderness

Steele Point Cottage, Vaucluse
Your hosts are local park rangers and possums while your accommodation is a self-contained hut on the harbour foreshore. If going rustic doesn't bother you, it might just be the best sleep in the city.

Bring your crew

Moog Hotel, Surry Hills
Where do rock stars stay when they're in town? Our guess is this once dilapidated 10-bed hotel, which a major facelift has scaled back to one very, very large room. Two pools, Playstation-enabled spa, big screen projectors and an unbelievable stereo system will keep your entourage entertained.

Home grown

Australia Street Cottage, Newtown
This 19th century sandstone building was once the family home of one of the best stonemasonry families in town, but the intricate detailing and elegant courtyard give it away. Self-contained with everything from cooking gear to yoga mats, it retains the warmth of a family home in an urban setting.

Room with a view

Pacific Road House, Palm Beach
This hideaway beach house is best for those needing a break from the city. The décor is woody and coastal, the bamboo-lined courtyard a nice touch, but the biggest attraction is the enormous open-plan living area with views.
