The Local Taphouse

If you've been lamenting the lack of really good bars in Sydney, your time has come. Head down to the corner of Flinders and South Dowling - the old Palace has gone to that big public house in the sky and taken Pubboy with it. It's been replaced with a most exciting offering, the Local Taphouse. Owners Guy Greenstone, Jeff Bennett, Steve Jeffars and Derek Schaefer have done nothing to muck with the basic pub DNA of the building, only enhance it with a very nice fit-out. The two-level bar specialising in beer has a very industrial 20s/30s feel - like a mix between a munitions factory, an intimate gentleman's club and a Victorian railway waiting room. There are 20 beers on tap at any one time and they're constantly changing. Order a tasting paddle – five different beers for $13. It's a great way to try a wide range of beers without getting sozzled. You'll find a few beers you may have tried before (Coopers Sparkling, Little Creatures, Hoegaarden), plus quite a few ones that might be new to you too, such as Wicked Elf, Kamberra Kolsch, and 5 Islands Spangled Wheat. While the beer's great, the room's rockin' and the music is pitched just right, the food menu could do with a shake up. But you're not here for the food; you're here for the fun. This is a bar you'll want to drink at all the time - just the way Greenstone and friends intended it to be. "We're not interested in getting in the social pages, we're just interested in being a good bar." Word.
